I-5 southbound, Bakersfield to Valencia (Camping World).

Here is about 23 minutes of engine monitoring heading up the Grapevine. For those not familiar with the Grapevine, It is the climb over into the LA Basin from the North and is a fairly miserable and taxing climb. 23 minutes is not the whole stretch but rather a slice going up the hill.wpe1.jpg (123472 bytes)

Automatic Rough

For the non-flying, or rather non-pilot, community that may be wondering what I mean: Automatic Rough is a phenomena that presents itself immediately and all during 1) flying a single engine airplane over water beyond gliding distance of land and 2) flying a multi-engine airplane in an area of 10,000+ foot mountains when the height that the airplane can maintain on one engine is 5000.

Today, or rather yesterday, the phenomena surfaced while piloting the GMC.

We, the GMC and I, smoked up and over the Grapevine as if it was Kansas. Second gear as it got steep we maintained 45-50mph. Fifty is in second requires more RPM than I'd like to turn (3200) so 45 is my usual target on uphills that require a downshift into second.

Anyways, as I made my mandatory stop at Camping World I filled up with propane and emptied the holding tank to get ready for the eastbound trip.

Getting Late... to be continued, but probably not for a few days as West Texas is void of wireless coverage. See you at El Paso around Tuesday/Wednesday.
